Abstract: Paper reviews long term (1757-1992) trends in the discovery of marine species new to science which occur in Britain and Ireland. Numbers of species known in Britain and Ireland are plotted against time for several taxa. The resultant curves are used to infer the degree to which the groups are currently known and whether there are a great many species left to describe or not. Less conspicuous taxa are found to have many more species left to describe.
