Abstract: A survey was carried out on the lichens from Achill Island to Killary Harbour, including Louisburgh, Westport, Castlebar, and the off-shore islands. Rock, moorland and seacoast were surveyed. A detailed description of the lichens inhabiting the border between the sea and the cliffs on the northwest shore of Clare Island is presented. The change in the species as the survey moved inland is noted, i.e. from rocks washed by the tide at high water, to sprayed rocks, to nearshore boulders and so on landward.
