Abstract: This paper reports on a laboratory investigation into the effect of temperature on net photosynthesis and respiration, using cultured isolates of the red alga Gelidium pusillum obtained from Norway, Ireland, northern Spain and Gran Canaria. Responses to constant-temperature regimes and to rapid temperature increases and decreases were investigated. Results suggested the existence of two latitudinal ecotypes in the north-east Atlantic: a 'cold-temperate' and a 'warm-temperate' ecotype.
