Abstract: Paper reports on an investigation carried out on a sublittoral bed of the horse mussel Modiolus modiolus near Black Rock in Strangford Lough, N.I.. The Modiolus community was sampled by hand, dredge, quadrat and direct observation. The study was divided into the following parts: a preparation of a systematic list of the associated fauna; a study of the epibiotic component; a determination of species density by quadrat survey; a lab study on the behaviour of potential predators and a substudy on comparative shell strengths of the mussels Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis.
