Abstract: Sediment samples from 15 locations along the tidal reach of the River Lagan, Northern Ireland, were examined for heavy metal content. Comparison with sediment from polluted rivers and estuaries worldwide showed elevated levels of Zn, Pb, Cu and Mn in the Lagan, whilst levels of Cr and Cd were relatively normal. It is suggested that high metal levels are responsible for the paucity of fauna in the tidal section of the river.
