Abstract: Thirteen sublittoral transects were laid in Lough Hyne (Co. Cork). Depth profiles, substratum structure, algal cover, and numbers of six goby species were recorded at 1 m intervals along each transect. Most species appeared to have different substratum preferences. Gobius cruentatus and Thorogobius ephippiatus were largely confined to holes under rocks; Pomatoschistus pictus and Gobius niger dominated open terrain. Some P. pictus schooled with Gobiusculus flavescens in shallow water.
