Abstract: This paper was originally presented as the Presidential Address to the Plymouth Institution, 14 October 1915, and deals generally with the fishing industry of Britain and Ireland. The history and economic importance of the industry are briefly discussed, then (in greater detail) marine food chains, leading to consideration of the role of diatoms and the nature of seawater. Copepods, nutrition and plankton distribution are also examined.
