Abstract: 'The growth of knowledge related to finfish and shellfish pathology in Ireland is reviewed. The mid-1960s are seen as the threshold of a national approach to fish pathology, induced by the outbreak and devastating effects of ulcerative dermal necrosis (UDN), and reinforced by the gradual development of fish farming. The major advances in our knowledge of the pathological conditions affecting both wild and farmed fish in the country are considered and, in addition, those which have implications for human health and environment.'
