Abstract: Three main regions of environmental conditions on the west coast of Ireland are recognised and communities are briefly described. They are: (1) Stenohaline, stenothermal, offshore, (a) Tethyopsilla - Tetilla association (below 40 m), (b) Axinella dissimilis association (25-40 m); (2) Stenohaline, eurythermal, offshore-inshore, (a) Upper Laminaria hyperborea association (0-15 m), (b) Lower Laminaria hyperborea; (3) Euryhaline, eurythermal, inshore, (a) Lithohannium association (0-20 m) (b) Laminaria saccharina association (0-10 m), (c) Raspailia - Stelligara association (below 10 m), and (d) Musculus discors association (no depth limits, strong currents).
