Abstract: The paper outlines the results of a field experiment to determine whether artificial substrata used for the monitoring of mussel settlement required conditioning prior to use in order to record colonisation rates accurately. Freshwater and seawater conditioned scouring pads were compared with unconditioned pads in terms of density and population structure of spat recruiting to them after two-week deployment on an exposed, rocky shore in Galway Bay.
