Abstract: This paper describes the main features of the Irish Sea using information from a number of sources. Information from the British Geological Survey describes the main bathymetrical features, sediment distribution and mineral resources of the Irish Sea and is accompanied by maps of bathymetry, geology and sedimentology. Coastal features, namely sea cliffs, saltmarsh, sand dunes and shingle structures, man's potential damaging effects and the protective conservation measures taken are also described. There is also a more detailed description of the habitat/community classification system which has been used to describe littoral and sublittoral areas of the Irish Sea.
