Abstract: This report is a response by Greenpeace to the 'Waste inputs and pollution' report of the Irish Sea Conference. The authors are highly critical of the report. They suggest that the principal failure of the report is that it promotes a system of environmental protection based upon assimilative capacity. In order to do this, it would be necessary to set precise levels of contamination which may be safely absorbed into the environment. Because of the complexity of the environment and interactions of the contaminant, environment and biota, this is impossible. The report also describes a number of pollution problems not addressed by the ISSG report. The report argues for a change in philosophy towards the precautionary principle and reduction of the amounts of pollution at source by changes in production methods towards 'clean production'.
