Abstract: Abstract only. Large volumes of chromium (III) effluent are discharged to receiving waterways by many leather tanneries and the biota in the vicinity of these outfalls are found to accumulate chromium to a high concentration. Mussels were transplanted into a contaminated estuary and the tissue distribution, seasonal and spatial variation and ultrastructural location of the chromium was determined in the local and transplanted mussels.
