Abstract: It is shown that in some winters water in the Celtic Sea, to the south of Ireland, became heavy enough to flow to the edge of the continental shelf and then to sink to a depth of several hundred metres. The consequence of this cascade is discussed in terms of its effect on fishing in this region.
