Abstract: Samples of littoral sand from forty-three stations on the west coast of Ireland were examined. Biogenic carbonate, consisting of the exoskeletons of various animals and of plant material, was found to compose a variable but significant portion of most of the samples. A correlation between exposure and biogenic carbonate content has been established with minor variations due to local coastal, offshore and topographic conditions.
