Abstract: Abstract only. The aims of this project were to evaluate the potential of ballast water and sediments for the introduction of non-indigenous species to Ireland and to determine the most appropriate treatment or management responses to deal with the problem. Among the species transported in ballast water/sediments are toxic algae, pathogenic bacteria and many species of fish, molluscs and crustaceans. Cork Harbour appeared particularly at risk for the introduction of toxic dinoflagellates, a concern to Irish aquaculturists.
