Abstract: 'The oxygen consumption of bivalves Cerastoderma edule, Macoma balthica and Tellina tenuis was measured at lowered and elevated chlorinities ranging from 0.734% to 3.277%. In all three species, respiration rates declined towards the extremes, and ... there was a significant difference in all three species between the maximum rates and those at the extremes.' Response patterns and relationship between consumption and body size were also investigated.
