Abstract: Paper presents data on the use of artificial substrates for studying inter-tidal algal cryptofauna. The fauna of two types of artificial substrate were compared with that of three species of naturally occurring red algae. The colonization of the artificial substrates left in situ for periods ranging from 1 month to over a year was investigated. Data on the malacostracan and gastropods, which are the dominant faunal components of the red algal turfs in Bantry Bay, southwest Ireland, are reported here.
