Abstract: Paper outlines some 'baseline studies' conducted by the Botany Dept., University College, Cork on the algae on the southwest coasts of Ireland. These studies involve both the tidal and subtidal parts. The objectives of these studies include; determination of species present, study of the dominant communities, seasonal and annual fluctuations of a natural type and those of artificial origin (e.g. pollution effects), identification of indicator species for pollution or its absence, observations of new or introduced species, continuous monitoring of species at fixed sites, analysis of seaweeds from various locations for heavy metals.
