Abstract: Paper investigates the standing stock of macrofauna on seven sandy beaches in Co. Down. Approximately 50 species, comprising over 13 000 individuals, were identified and counted. Grain size, water, and organic contents of the sands were analysed, and the depth of the 'black layer' taken as a measure of the degree of oxygenation. The value of biological and physical indicators of exposure is discussed. Results are briefly compared with those found by previous investigators for other sandy beaches.
