Abstract: Characteristic patterns in phytoplankton species dominance are evident in Irish coastal waters in summer. These patterns can be related to water column stability, in particular thermal stratification. The biogeographical distribution of phytoplankton in shelf waters around Ireland is described in relation to local physical processes such as stratification, tidal mixing and upwelling.
