Abstract: Paper gives a detailed account of 'a very serious dying-off of Zostera marina (slitch, eelgrass, or grass-wrack)' which took place over a wide area of Strangford Lough, Co. Down in the early to mid 1930s. Its general habitat and distribution are discussed, followed by a close examination of different localities within Strangford Lough. The consequences of its disappearance in areas are discussed as are suggested causes of its destruction.
