Abstract: The great silver smelt Argentina silus was trawled at a depth of 74 fathoms, 75 miles south of the Old Head of Kinsale. This is a first recording of this species in Irish waters. At the time, one species of Syngnathus was also believed to inhabit British waters. However, taxonomic work revealed that a second smaller species, Syngnathus rostellatus, also existed and specimens of the former where subsequently renamed S. rostellatus.
