Abstract: This is the first 'serious' survey of the flora of Achill Island. An historical overview of previous surveys is presented and the physical features of the island are described. The species found are listed, with reference to specific vegetation associations on the island. Most species were found on the eastern shores where environmental conditions were less severe. In addition, 'in the sheltered waters of Achill Sound, peat-bog often forms the shoreline, and also the higher part of the foreshore, and Fucus grows on tree stumps from which the overlying peat has been washed away'.
