Eiglera flavida (Th. Fr.) Hafellner

Description: Known from north Tipperary, this is a lichen of periodically wet calcareous pebbles by shaded streams and rivers. It is closely related to Hymenelia and Ionaspis, but has the appearance of a miniaturised Aspicilia. The concave Aspicilia-like disc is black, the upper surface of which is blue-green, a character best looked for when wet. The thallus scratches green with a fingernail.

Key Identification Features:

  • Thallus: on small, intermittently irrigated calcareous pebbles; discs black like those of a tiny Aspicilia
  • Uppermost layer or the disc contains a blue-green pigment.
