Lichens : Acarosporales : AcarosporaceaeLichens

Acarospora veronensis Massal.

Description: This lichen occurs as a sparse scattering of flake-like areoles (bits of thallus) over nutrient-rich acid rock, often following into the cracks and crevices. Discs numerous, concave, sometimes becoming crater-like or growing to obscure the areoles completely. Spot tests negative. Records are few, for example, one in County Kerry. Outside Ireland, it is recorded from pebbles in dunes and from roofing tiles.

Key Identification Features:

  • Thallus of a few scattered areoles, black when dry; nutrient-enriched rock preferred
  • Discs concave at first, growing to obscure the areoles and becoming gyrose.
