Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) Liebl.

Sessile Oak

Quercus petraea

Description: This is one of the two native oaks of Northern Ireland, and is the principal tree species of the native oakwoods at Rostrevor (photograph) and Breen. Rather commoner than the similar Quercus robur with which it hybridizes. The factors which determine the distributions of these two species in Northern Ireland are unclear.

The Irish word for oak is dair, and an oak grove is diare, which has become anglicised as 'derry', a frequent component of Irish placenames.

All names: Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) Liebl.; Quercus sessiliflora Salisb.

Distribution Map from NBN: Quercus petraea at National Biodiversity Network mapping facility, data for UK.
