Calamagrostis stricta (Timm) Koeler

Narrow Small-reed

Description: This grass species was first found by David Moore on a small island in L Neagh and sent by him to William Jackson Hooker who identified it as Calamagrostis lapponica. An anonymous description of this species was published in the Notices attached to the Ordnance Survey of Co Londonderry vol I (1837) with an illustration (plate 4) by George Victor Du Noyer. By 1852 Hooker had revised his opinion and thought that the Lough Neagh plants were C. stricta. It is now considered that they are a distinct variety, var. hookeri Syme. It is a species of damp meadows close to the Lough Beg/L Neagh shores, formerly in all five shore counties, but declining now because of drainage and land reclamation.

All names: Calamagrostis stricta (Timm) Koeler; Calamagrostis hookeri (Syme) Druce; Calamagrostis neglecta auct.; Deyeuxia neglecta auct.
